Privacy policy
What this site collects, what it does not, and what third parties are involved. We keep it short because a policy nobody reads protects nobody.
What we collect
- The newsletter address you type in. If you subscribe we store the email address, the browser language your request carried, the IP address the request came from, and the page you subscribed from. That is the record we need to prove consent and to remove you again.
- Ordinary server logs. The web server and its reverse proxy record request lines (address, path, status, user agent) for operational and abuse purposes.
What we do not collect
- There are no reader accounts, no comments and no login — there is nothing to sign into.
- We do not build reader profiles and we do not sell or share addresses. The newsletter list is used to send the newsletter and nothing else.
- We do not run analytics on this site unless a measurement ID is configured, in which case the section below applies.
Cookies and local storage
This site itself sets no cookies. One thing is stored in your browser:
- Your theme choice (light or dark), in
localStorageunder the keybc-theme. It never leaves your device.
If advertising is enabled, Google and its partners may set cookies or read device identifiers to select, cap and measure ads. Those are third-party cookies and they are governed by your consent choice.
Consent
Where the law requires it — the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland — the page loads with advertising and analytics storage set to denied, and that default is sent before anything else runs. Google's certified consent management platform is used to collect and record your choice there, and nothing is loaded for advertising or measurement until you allow it.
Elsewhere, including the United States, advertising and measurement are on unless you turn them off. Either way you can change the choice at any time: Google's own ad settings turn personalised advertising off for your account or browser (google.com/settings/ads), and clearing this site's cookies resets the choice the consent prompt recorded.
Third parties
- Google AdSense — serves the advertisements. Google's own privacy notice covers the data it processes, and you can turn personalised advertising off at google.com/settings/ads.
- Google Analytics — only if a measurement ID is configured, and only after consent.
- Typefaces — the site's own typefaces are served from this site. The advertisements Google serves may load their own fonts from a font CDN, which means your IP address reaches that CDN when an ad uses one.
Retention and your rights
Subscriber records are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be removed; unsubscribing takes effect immediately and the address is deleted. Server logs are kept for a short operational window. You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by sending a note through the contact form. If you are in the EEA or the UK you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
This site is written for IT directors, security leads and platform engineers at work. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
When this policy changes, the change is described here rather than made quietly. Contact for anything on this page: the contact form.
Solution Overview Media — this describes what this site does, written plainly rather than in the longest possible form. It is not legal advice.
